When you think of drinking warm milk before bed, you are probably brought back to memories of childhood. Mom would warm up a cup of steaming two-percent, read a quick bedtime story, then lights out.


Seems pretty odd for a twenty-something to do the same, right? Well, there’s a new trend that people are turning to for a good night’s sleep that is pretty similar to the old childhood tradition.


There’s a delicious milk-based sleep aid quickly gaining popularity, and it so happens to be totally Instagram-able.

Moon milk has been taking the web by storm as the hottest new wellness trend. Basically, it is a mixture of spices, herbs, and milk — all ingredients to help you sleep. The warm milk alone promotes sleep, and the spices and herbs add great flavor and provide an even more soothing effect.. Moon milk drinkers claim it also has several different health benefits, such as:


  • Balancing your adrenal system, the parts of your body that control hormones

  • Strengthening your immune system

  • Relieving stress

  • Increasing energy levels during the day


Sounds great, right?

Some of these claims have even been verified by certified culinary nutritionist Neda Varbanova. She told HelloGiggles, “The adaptogens in Moon Milk promote relaxation. Milk itself also contains tryptophan and melatonin, which are natural substances that are known for inducing sleep. (1)”

Making Your Own Moon Milk

If you want to try moon milk for yourself, try out this awesome recipe from Love & Olive Oil (2) for making your own at home (in a gorgeous blue color!):


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk of your choosing (I like whole milk, cashew milk, and almond milk)

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup, or to taste

  • 1 teaspoon butterfly pea flower powder

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • pinch freshly ground nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon ashwagandha powder (optional)


Directions:

  • In a small saucepan set over medium-low heat, whisk together milk with maple syrup, butterfly pea powder, and spices until powder is dissolved and milk is warm but not yet simmering.

  • Whir briefly using a handheld milk frother for a latte-like finish, or whisk vigorously to create a fine froth.

  • Pour into warm mug and enjoy. Optionally top with a sprinkle of ground up butterfly pea flowers and freeze-dried blueberries.


You can also try making golden milk, a moon milk with added turmeric to give it a golden hue. Here’s a tasty recipe from mindbodygreen (3):


  • Add ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder to ¼ cup of water in a pot and heat until it becomes a paste—stirring occasionally to help dissolve the turmeric powder.

  • Add 1 cup of milk (either use organic raw cow/goat milk, unhomogenized organic cow/goat milk, organic almond milk, or organic coconut milk) to the turmeric paste.

  • Add 1 to 2 teaspoon of either ghee, coconut oil, or almond oil to the milk mixture.

  • Add a pinch of either cardamom powder or cinnamon powder (optional).

  • Add 1 teaspoon of honey once the milk has cooled enough to touch.
