What Is Light Sleep, Exactly?

Deep sleep, also known as slow wave sleep or N3 sleep is characterized by reduced arousability, growth hormone release, and memory processing. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep handles emotional processing and creativity. Each stage is thought to serve an important function. Getting all three stages in the right proportions is important for healthy sleep.
A healthy adult typically spends roughly 50% of the night in light sleep, 20% in deep and 25% in REM, with the remaining 5% spent in micro-awakenings, which you might not even remember. Each sleep cycle is punctuated by a period of light sleep.

How to Improve Light Sleep
Improving light sleep isn't about reducing it. Instead, aim to improve sleep continuity and reduce avoidable awakenings. For many sensitive sleepers, the sleep environment is a high-yield and accessible place to start. Persistent daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, witnessed apneas, gasping, restless legs, unusual behavior during sleep, or insomnia should prompt a medical evaluation.
